The Functions of a Dynamic Compressor

The main function of the dynamic compressors is to increase the pressure of gas or air by passing on velocity energy, then changing that energy into pressure energy. Centrifugal and axial compressors are two commonly used types of dynamic compressors. The most used for industrial compressed air is the centrifugal-type of air compressor. Many of the larger manufacturing plants utilize centrifugal compressors for their overall plant air. Many large manufacturing plants may also utilize other types of compressors in order to contain demand load swings, even though the centrifugal compressors manage the base load. As the impellers rotate at a high rate of speed, each of the impellers passes on radial flow to the air or gas, which then goes through a volute or diffuser. As the impellers go through a volute or diffuser, the remaining velocity energy is changed into pressure energy.

A rotor that contains many rows of blades, as well as a stator with rows of stationary vanes, are both contained on the axial compressor. Velocity energy is passed on through these rotating blades; this process is usually accomplished in the form of an axial plane. The motionless vanes serve as a diffuser in order to change the residual velocity energy into pressure energy. A compressor of this type usually has quite a high compression effectiveness and is generally limited to very high flow capabilities.

Impellers and rotors that unite the features of axial and centrifugal compressors are contained on the mixed flow compressors.
