Types of Industrial Air Compressors
In order to simplify installation, it is
common nowadays to sell industrial air compressors that are equipped
with the compressor, drive motor and numerous accessories, which are
usually mounted on a frame. Oftentimes, the unit must be moved into
position by a forklift. Bigger packaged units may require the
utilization of an overhead crane.
For purposes of sound and noise reduction, as well as for purposes of
aesthetics, it may be necessary to include an enclosure around the unit.
Two main types of industrial compressors are available. These are the
positive-displacement and dynamic compressors.
The positive-displacement types are available in reciprocating and
rotary units. The manner in which the positive-displacement systems
operate is that a certain amount of air or gas is contained in a
compression chamber, and the volume in which it resides is mechanically
decreased. This situation causes a corresponding increase in the
pressure before it is released. There may be variations in the discharge
pressure of the air flow, but basically the flow of air stays relatively
constant provided that a continuous speed is maintained.
Impellers that rotate at extremely high speeds are the means of
providing the dynamic compressors with the ability to pass on velocity
energy which enables the air or gas to constantly flow. This rapid
energy is transformed into pressure energy. It is done so by the
impellers as well as the discharge volutes or diffusers.
Dynamic compressors pass on velocity energy to continuously flowing air
or gas by means of impellers rotating at very high speeds. The velocity
energy is changed into pressure energy both by the impellers and the
discharge volutes or diffusers.
