How to Maintain your
Natural Gas Engine
The routine maintenance of a gas engine
air compressor is much like that of your automobile. Many of the
maintenance procedures of the gas engine are comparable to those that
are done on your vehicle. Most vendors will offer to enter into a
maintenance agreement with their customers at a reasonable price.
Routine maintenance costs are generally $.011 (one and one-tenth cent)
per horsepower hour. This figure can fluctuate up or down depending on
the manner in which the engine is used, but it is a reliable figure in
which to determine the yearly maintenance costs. For example: If a 200
Hp engine operates for 2500 hours annually, the annual maintenance costs
would be: 200 Hp x 2500 hrs/yr x $.011/Hp per hour for a total of
$5,500.
The maintenance on the engine should be determined by the amount of
hours that it is used. Following is a guideline to help you determine
when and what maintenance procedures are necessary.
On a daily basis, you should check the fluid levels and, if needed,
bring them up to the proper level. Examine your engine for leaks and/or
loose hoses or belts.
At 250 hours of engine operation, you should visually examine the hoses
and belts.
At 750 hours of engine operation, you should change the oil and filter
(or air and oil). Also, adjust the valves; check spark plugs; check the
ignition timing; and clean the crankcase breather. Since the filter
cleans moisture and dust from the fuel, the filter should be replaced
(or at least checked) at this juncture.
After 1500 hours of operation, the spark plugs should be checked, and if
necessary, cleaned and replaced. A service technician should check the
gas pressure to carburetor, and also adjust the carburetor to determine
if it has a surplus of O2.
At 6000 hours, inspect the turbocharger and after-cooler and conduct
maintenance according to the manufacturer's guidelines. Also check the
cylinder compression; the compression should be the same across all
cylinders. The water pump and water pump idler pulley assembly should be
exchanged or rebuilt.
