Residential Air
Compressor Types
There are two types of air compressors
for residential use. They are the piston-type compressors and the
compact air compressors.
The following are some of the general characteristics of the piston-type
compressors. The piston-type compressors have adjustable pressure
settings that may be set by the operator. When the pressure in the tank
reaches a certain level, the motor shuts off. When air is diminished
from the tank, the pressure inside the tank will drop, then the motor
restarts in order to build the pressure back up.
The piston compressors are available in two types: single-stage
compressors and two stage compressors.
Single-stage compressors are sufficient for home use. They contain one
piston; the piston compresses air and delivers it to the storage tank.
Light-duty compressors that have a maximum rating under 150 pounds of
pressure per square inch (psi) usually contain the single stage system.
Two-stage compressors are generally found in places where they are
continuously used or in workshop environments. They can also be found on
sturdy commercial compressors that have maximum ratings over 150 psi.
They contain two pistons which operate to compress the air then
transport it to the storage tank. The purpose of the first piston is to
compress the air and drive it through a check valve to the second
piston. The function of the second piston is to further compress the air
then transport it to the storage tank.
The smallest and lightest weight compressors are the compact air
compressors. These air compressors don't contain storage tanks, so in
order to supply air, they must operate constantly. These compact
compressors are used to power caulk guns, small spray guns, and glue
guns. They are also used to inflate tires and sports equipment.
