Some Distinctions of Single Act Compressors

The single-acting compressor is distinctive from other types of compressors due to its piston, which are similar to those on the automobile. The piston is pushed through a connecting rod from the crankshaft. With each rotation of the crankshaft, compression takes place on the top portion of the piston. These types of single-acting, reciprocating air compressors may be either air-cooled or liquid-cooled, but are usually air cooled.

The air-cooled, reciprocating air compressor is the most common type of air compressor in both the fractional and single-digit hp size categories. The larger air compressors are available up to 150 hp, although those above 25 hp are not very common.

Reciprocating air compressors utilize two types of capacity control. The easiest form is the star-stop method, which turns off the compressor as a pressure switch transmits a signal to the main motor starter when a preset pressure is reached. As the pressure falls to another preset pressure, the switch transmits a signal to restart the compressor. In order to avoid constant starting and stopping, an air receiver becomes a type of buffer.

Multi-stage and two-stage types of air compressors are available in durable and efficient models. These particular models contain inter-stage cooling which will decrease discharge which, in turn, will result in better efficiency and durability.

There are many benefits of single-acting reciprocating air compressors. Some of these benefits include: they are easy to maintain; they are small and light weight; they may be positioned near the area in which they are used; and they do not need separate cooling systems.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages with these types of air compressors such as the rather high cost of compression and they are normally designed to operate less than 50% of the time.
