Getting Technical: Natural Gas Air Compressors

Several features of a low speed natural gas engine (at 1400 rpm) are that the engine is somewhat larger than the high speed engine and there is a greater time between the routine maintenance and repairs of the engine and also a longer period of time in which the engine may need to be rebuilt. However, the low speed natural gas engine is more expensive than the high speed engine because of the bigger bulk of the equipment that encompasses the engine.

Some of the characteristics of a high speed natural gas engine, which are greater than 1400 rpm, are that it’s less expensive initially than the low speed natural gas engine. There is also a shorter time period between the maintenance of the engine and a shorter time period between the necessities of rebuilding the engine.

Some of the more important features of an automobile derivative natural gas engine are that it is inexpensive to maintain initially, and is less expensive overall than both the high speed natural gas engine and the low speed natural gas engine. Also the lifespan of the engine is quite similar to that of an automobile engine. However, the engine must be replaced with a new unit when it reaches the end of its service life.

The features of a rich burn engine are that the engine uses a rich air-fuel ratio, which allows for easily controlled emissions. These engines are especially common in Southern California where the air quality control standards are more stringent than almost all other areas of the country.
A characteristic of a lean burn engine is that it uses a lean air-fuel ratio, which necessitates a more complicated emission control method. For that reason, this type of engine is not as common as the rich burn engine.
